About Lauren

Senior software engineer at Capital One, based out of Richmond, VA. Proud pet parent to two foxhounds, a cat, an Arab X horse, and a ball python. Enjoys 3d printing, PC gaming, new tech, playing Magic and other TCGs, spirited driving, reading, and baking. Openly autistic and proponent of mental health support and neurodivergence in the workplace.

Greatly prefers to work in Java, but can find enjoyment in most languages. Most comfortable getting into the weeds of backend services and business applications. Experienced with front-end applications in multiple different frameworks. Thrives in high-stress, highly visible roles. Adamant about clean code standards and following best practices. Loves sharing knowledge and mentoring others, and is an active participant in various workplace special interest organizations.

Work Experience

Senior SWE & Technical Lead, Enterprise Document Platforms - Capital One (July 2022 - present)

  • Lead engineering team members in the development and technical maintenance of four business-critical services, ensuring adherence to regulatory compliance
  • Successfully lead the implementation of a lambda API, allowing the decommissioning of a high-risk legacy process, replacing it with a resilient and scalable single service
  • Designed and architected a solution to replace another legacy process, which will result in significant cost savings once fully implemented
  • Actively develop services in Java and Python, making use of Apache libraries, Spring (Boot, Batch, Web), AWS SDKs, boto3, pandas, etc
  • Participate in tech leadership team discussions regarding the direction and future of the platform, and offer valued insight and ideas to improve the processes

Software Engineer, Enterprise Document Platforms - Capital One (August 2020 - July 2022)

  • Use Java Spring and Apache Spark to develop and support microservices that make up document generation processes
  • Manage and configure platform infrastructure on AWS
  • Deploy code to CI pipelines using Jenkins
  • Responsible for handling production issues quickly and with minimal interruption to the platform
  • Updated a front-end application to a new internal UI library
  • Helped guide the development of the aforementioned UI library to better fit an Angular application

Software Engineering Intern - Excella Consulting (2018 - 2020)

  • Used Ruby on Rails, Python Django, and Java Spring to build client software
  • Worked as part of an agile team, occasionally acting as team lead
  • Used Rails rspec to build a test suite for a solar energy company
  • Implemented FactoryBoy, Faker, and freeze-gun in Django tests
  • Employed Cucumber and Gherkin frameworks to build UI tests
  • Researched potential solutions and make decisions that affect the team and code base
  • Actively used command line git, including experience with both the merge and rebase workflows
  • Developed in containerized environments, making use of Docker Compose

Research Assistant - IMPACT Lab (2018 - 2020)

  • Assisted faculty in cybersecurity research
  • Built a full CTFd platform (Python Flask) with custom functionality
  • Brainstormed and developed cybersecurity Capture the Flag challenges for a national competition
  • Worked with IOT devices to build a physical “hack-house” challenge
  • Built dummy clients for use by participants in the CTF competition

A Python Django web application ordering system for a local donut shop. The application allows customers to create an account and place a donut order online. This was a team project for a software engineering class.
